Volunteer Spotlight-Sandy Konyu
Sandy Konyu
We are all looking forward to our upcoming film about our Healing Heart NW experiences here in Rwanda. Sandy Konyu, wife of Jason Konyu our stellar OR-PA is a professional photographer. She was approached by Hal and Sandy Goldberg about 2 years ago about coming to Rwanda to film the team working. As she is a mother of three children who at the time were 10, 4 and 2 she felt she needed to wait. Now 2 years later, she is with us here and has been busy filming, even starting before the surgeries began. She is filming 2-3 young women from before surgery, going to their homes, talking to family members and then following them through surgery and post op recovery.
Sandy has loved photography since her parents gave her a Pentex camera and a photography class when she was a freshman in high school. After high school she attended Central Basin Community College and finished at Spokane Falls CC in their ranked photography course. She worked for a couple of professional photographers before venturing on her own where she did wedding photography. After a few years of that, she now specializes in newborn to one year of age. It is her favorite type of photography. Her artistic focus in on hands and eyes, looking for emotion and detail to make the photograph special.
A little know fact about Sandy is that she worked as an EMT for 4 years starting at age 18. It has served her well through the years, especially when she was in India.
When Sandy was 19 she was chosen to go to India to build houses and she lived there for 4 months. Her first choice had been to go to Africa but that didn’t happen. Now it has, another dream realized! We are excited to see her film, which will take 2-4 months to edit...No pressure!!
