Many apologies for dropping the blog once we left Rwanda and returned to our "normal" hectic life in Spokane. I do want to make note of an outstanding fundraiser we had here in Spokane Wednesday evening 1/22/14 at the Bing Crosby Theater. Sam Joseph orchestrated the showing of the documentary film "Rising From Ashes". Sam greeted an outstanding crowd of about 500 supporters with slides of our trip to Rwanda. He outlined a bit of Rwandan history, HHNW history and mission educating many in the audience (some of whom had no idea of what we did) further extending our network of people who might be interested in helping us in some way! The film tells of the birth of the National Rwandan Cycling Team coached by the American cyclist Jock Boyer and directed and narrated by Forest Wittaker. The story highlights some of the Rwandan history, telling of the genocide and the divisiveness and broken country it left behind. Each of the cyclists on the team were deeply affected by the genocide as they were small children at the time. They use cycling and their training to build their physical, mental and emotional strength. The team bonds as a family even though they might never have met or socialized with each other previously. It is a story of hope in the indomitable spirit of the Rwandan people as they heal from the horrific genocide of 1994. We thank American West Bank for sponsoring the showing of the movie and especially Ken Hunt for suggesting and spearheading the sponsorship. John Siok of South Perry Pizza donated gift certificates. We could not have been so successful if the audience had not been so generous in their donations and interest! Thank you to all who helped and attended.
